Once you master their controls and the treacherous roads, you can take your best scores in the arcade and time attack modes (there's also a free-run mode where you can just lark about) and upload them via a couple of the third-party PS2 modems that are hitting the market.īattle Gear 2 isn't likely to make it to the states, but it may carve out a niche for itself in Japan - after all, one should never underestimate the appeal of being able to show off your skill in front of the entire world. ![]() ![]() The cars look equally nifty, with sharp detail and animating suspensions. That's until you check out the screenshots, which feature some very impressive outdoor environments - cities, cliffside downhills and the like. The courses have a very arcade-ish look to them, though, spanning a series of types reminiscent of Pole Position or Final Lap. The cars are of the sort you'd drive in GT or Shutokou Battle - Integras and NSXes from Honda, RX-7s from Mazda, Skylines and Silvias from Nissan, Lancers and GTOs from Mitsubishi, plenty of Imprezas from Subaru, and Toyota Truenos, Celicas, and Supras. More than thirty of the former compete on four of the latter, working their way up from relatively simple loops to snaking downhills and climbing courses. It compares best to something like Racing Jam or perhaps Shutokou Battle, an arcade-derived road-racing game featuring licensed cars from the Japanese big six and outdoor tracks of progressive complexity. We are at a loss, of course, as to why they would name a real-life racing game "Battle Gear." Readers are welcome to send their own explanations. ![]()
